Frequently Asked Questions:
How long will it take to become reasonably proficient?
The time it takes to become proficient varies with the style and your
own abilities. In most self-defense systems, you should feel confident
that you could defend yourself in about six months.
How long will it take to become a black belt?
Different styles take various times to reach black belt status. In most
of them, you should expect a three to five year study period.
How often should I attend class?
Most instructors recommend two classes per week, plus practice time between
classes. You should match your involvement with your fitness level.
How often should I practice?
Daily, if possible. Learning any martial art requires muscle memory -
training your body to respond without your conscious thought. Practicing
what you've learned on a daily basis, as often as possible, will help
reinforce the lessons.
Why do people bow when they enter the dojo?
The bow is a symbol of respect in Asian cultures and is similar to a
western handshake. Bowing before you enter the dojo shows respect to the
learning that takes place therein. You also bow as you leave in gratitude
for the self-improvement and discovery you've attained.
Is meditation part of some religion?
Meditation is used to clear the mind of distractions and prepare the mind
for learning. In this context, it has no religion significance.
Is sparring necessary to learn martial arts?
Most martial arts will require sparring. The amount will vary with the
school and style. However, full contact, no-holds-barred sparring isn't
necessary or practiced at most schools.
What are the chances of getting injured?
The chances of getting injured are very small. It is always recommended
that you speak with your doctor before beginning any physical routine
and that you always listen to your body and respect its limits.
Should I take group or private lessons?
Private lessons will increase your progressions by as much as three or
four times the normal rate. However, group lessons are important because
they allow you to work with others and experience how techniques work,
and how others learn and react. Taking a combination of both is the best
bet.
What age can/should children begin lessons?
It depends on the style, the school and the Sensei, as well as the child's
physical and emotional level of maturity. However, many arts may be learned
by those quite young and there are often classes offered for preschool
aged and older..
Will learning martial arts make my child aggressive?
There isn't any way to say NO, because some of it will depend on the school
and instructor. However, martial arts itself will not make a child more
aggressive. Most martial art programs will help a child build self-discipline
and character, teach him/her respect of self and others, and build self-esteem.
In many ways, martial arts can help reduce aggression, while at the same
time teaching a child how to handle difficult situations.
